We are actively seeking partners for @atman_eco_cabane man_eco_cabane. In #Lanaudière, we discovered a beautiful family-owned winery, The Saint-Gabriel Vineyard (@vignoblesaintgabriel ) . We took part in their tour and tasting experience and had the chance to connect with the owners.

Their wines were exceptional, with several awards to their name. We’re pleased to share that we will be serving and shelving their selection in our mini market and bar, as part of our focus on regional wine tasting as well as supporting local businesses.

We thought winter would stop all progress on the land. Instead, it simply slowed us down.

In Canada, heavy snow can quickly turn to thick ice when roads go unmaintained. This year, we were not able to move closer to the land, and with the road left unkept, heavy delivery trucks would struggle to make it up the steep hill at the entrance. For now, large deliveries have to wait.

So we continue the mini shed at a slower pace, working with what we have and staying close to the essentials.

By spring, the road will be clear of snow and ice, and heavy duty trucks will access the land with ease. Until then, we move forward steadily, patient and grounded in the season. One of the most exciting parts of building is selecting the finishing materials that pull the architectural design all together.

The larger samples shown here are for the walls and floors, prepared by our local supplier, Revêtements De Bois Inc. These tones help us understand how the space will feel, wear, and age over time.

The smaller samples are for cabinetry. They are made from an engineered wood material produced by Bō, made with wood mulch rather than full solid wood. Because of this, scratches can reveal internal defects more easily, which means each finish choice needs to be considered carefully.

The stains we are exploring are pin, calico, red canyon, autumn gold, and wheat gold.

Which would you choose for a forest cabin? Lighter golden tones, or deeper, cozier wood finishes?

Over time, we have discovered many animal footprints in the mud and snow around the land. Deer. Fox. Smaller woodland visitors.

And then one morning, the largest print of all appeared. A bear. Right at the door of our future reception area.

On a different day, while hiking an established trail nearby with friends, a deep roar echoed from behind a rock we were passing. Everyone froze. Some tried to explain it away. A machine, maybe. But we were far too deep in the forest for that sound to be anything else.

I said it out loud. It’s a bear.

For a moment, fear was very real. No bear spray. No protection. Just a group standing still, deciding what the next right step was.

Eventually, I moved first. Antoine, still unconvinced, calmly started tying his shoes until I stopped him and reminded him to snap back into reality.

Since then, we choose to carry bear spray as non-harmful protection when we enter the forest. This is a shared landscape, and we are guests here.

Finding bear prints near our reception only deepened that sense of wonder. A quiet reminder that this land is alive, active, and beautifully untamed.

We love how wild it is. We love our furry neighbors dearly. (No pun intended)

And we will do everything in our power to maintain, protect, and honor the habitat we are so lucky to be part of.

With the road complete, we’ve stepped into the next major phase: electricity.
This choice wasn’t taken lightly. We explored solar panels, underground lines, and even small-scale wind turbines - each with its own environmental and logistical hurdles.

Solar panels don’t emit greenhouse gases during use, but their production and disposal can carry significant environmental costs. Underground lines would have preserved the forest canopy, but the land has very little topsoil. Installing them would have required dynamiting through bedrock- a risk we weren’t willing to take.

In the end, we chose to connect to the Hydro-Québec grid. Quebec’s electricity is among the cleanest in the world, sourced primarily from renewable hydro power. Still, hydroelectricity isn’t impact-free - it can disrupt waterways and ecosystems.

To minimize our footprint, we’ll only be clearing an additional 5 meters along the roadside to install poles for the lines. Not a flawless solution - but a balanced one, based on our terrain and values.

In the future, we hope to offer fully off-grid cabins for those seeking a more radical approach to sustainable tourism. For now, we move forward with intention, learning as we go. 🌲⚡

We stopped by the home of Mandeville’s former baker who’s now crafting the sweetest little birdhouses by hand. Each one is lovingly made in his workshop, tucked away in the woods. And yes, he still bakes too -offering fresh loaves of bread straight from his cozy kitchen.

In recent years, Canada — like many parts of the world — has faced an alarming rise in forest fires. With hotter, drier summers, even a small spark can ignite a devastating blaze. Here in Mandeville, where our cabins are tucked deep within the woods, fire safety isn’t just a precaution — it’s a responsibility.

As part of our construction process, we’ve carefully cleared select trees to make way for the road and cabins. But removing trees is only half the work — the real risk comes from what’s left behind.

Dry twigs, branches, and forest debris are highly flammable, especially during Quebec’s increasingly hot and dry summers. To reduce wildfire risk, we’ve chosen to responsibly dispose of this material through controlled burning, as permitted by local guidelines and with careful oversight.

This small but essential step helps protect not only our cabins — but the entire forest ecosystem that surrounds them.

This approach not only protects the land from future fire hazards — it also aligns with our values: build slowly, tread lightly, and always in partnership with the forest.
